Wellington Park is a large, essentially natural, protected area that lies immediately behind Tasmania’s capital, Hobart. The Park has acknowledged strong community valuing. Managing such values provides challenges across the spectrum of management. This paper examines recent attempts to identify and manage such values, including a recent assessment of the social values of Wellington Park which provides insight into how community can value an essentially natural area. The results indicate that community values are complex and broad ranging, and quite different to the more ‘scientific’ values which are generally the predominant focus of management.
