Montague became part of the Fishermans Bend urban renewal area in Melbourne following are-zoning in 2012. The area is characterised at present by businesses and factories. It is on the cusp of transformational change to high density residential living. Montague was once a tight-knit, proud residential and working community. What happened to the houses and the people who lived there? This paper explores aspects of the life of this lost community drawing on the perspective of people who grew up there as children. It asks how themes from Montague’s history might inform the transformation to high density living that is ahead, rather than relying only on the remnants of built heritage which may be preserved.
