As societies are becoming increasingly diverse, the rise of ‘the politics of difference’ over the ‘politics of equality’ is challenging national identities and cultural heritage management. In the past 20 years Brazil has been a testing site for a number of these issues, transforming from a monocultural nation to multiculturalism, however, carrying old problems from post slavery social and cultural relationships. This article intends to analyse the case of the Africans in Brazil, exploring the relationships between national identity, heritage, people and place both theoretically and experientially.
