This tour presented with our program partners Open House Melbourne and the Australia ICOMOS National Scientific Committee on Energy & Sustainability will focus on building adaptations that embody both heritage and sustainability principles. Delegates will hear from experts at a number of highly significant heritage sites around Melbourne that illustrate the diversity of sustainable heritage practice across the city.
171 Collins Street
A member of the Bates Smart project team will provide a tour of 171 Collins Street, Melbourne’s first Premium Grade, 6-star Green Star office building. The 31,000sqm, 17 level office tower rises behind the restored heritage Mayfair Building, with its beautifully detailed facade creating a woven crystalline appearance to Melbourne’s city skyline. It represents leadership in environmentally sustainable design and is targeting a 5 star NABERS Energy rating.
Flinders Street Station
Completed in 1909, Flinders Street Station is the centre of Melbourne’s suburban railway network and the complex is one of Melbourne’s most recognisable landmarks. In 2015, the state government committed $100m to revitalise the station and undertake urgent conservation works. Major Projects Victoria will lead this tour of the complex and a behind-the-scenes look at the project.
Goods Shed North
The former Railways No. 2 Goods Shed was built in 1889, and originally spanned almost two city blocks. After becoming redundant in the 1980s, it was later bisected to allow for the Collins Street extension into Docklands. In 2009-09, it underwent a major redevelopment, becoming the first 5-star heritage-listed building in Victoria.
