The National Trust is the premier advocate for the protection and conservation of significant trees in Victoria, a role it has fulfilled with fervor since 1982. The integrity of the Register is managed by a volunteer committee that includes the state’s eminent experts on heritage trees. Digital advances since 2011 have opened the Register up to new audiences, through the Trust Trees app and website. To celebrate significant trees, the inaugural Tree of the Year contest was held in Victoria this year. Collectively, the National Trusts of Australia are positioned to lead government in the recognition of significant trees across the country – currently a hot issue at the nexus between climate change and heritage conservation in Australia.
