International Vice President, Peter Phillips, and Australia ICOMOS President, Kerime Danis, will host a session which outlines how ICOMOS is governed and how you can become more involved.
The International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) works for the conservation and protection of cultural heritage places. It is the only global non-government organisation of this kind, which is dedicated to promoting the application of theory, methodology and scientific techniques to the conservation of cultural heritage. Currently there are approximately 9,500 members throughout the world.
ICOMOS International is a complex beast in its governance and this is your chance to gain a better understanding including some of leading roles currently being undertaken by Australian members. For example did you know that the International Board consists of the President, the Secretary General, the Treasurer, five Vice Presidents, 12 general members and the President of the Advisory Committee. These members (together with invited experts) all have demonstrated professional qualities and represent every major region of the globe. The Board prepares the program and the budget, oversees their implementation and registers new National and International Committees. It is assisted by the Advisory Committee (comprising the Presidents of each National, Transnational and International Scientific Committee of ICOMOS) and the Scientific Council (comprising the Presidents of each of the International Scientific Committees).
Australia ICOMOS currently consists of over 600 members (full members, young professionals, associates and institutions) and is managed by an Executive Committee of 15 members, elected from the membership every two years. We currently have three National Scientific Committees and many other Advisory, Reference and Working Groups. Other key initiatives will be discussed such as our partnership with ICOMOS Pasifika; and our work to increase our relevance to young and early career professionals.
We hope this session will encourage you to take a more active part in ICOMOS.
