Exhibiting Industry and Art: The BHP Epergne

Michele SUMMERTON

Objects associated with industrial heritage places give expression to the particular activities and operations that are conducted at these sites.

One special category of objects proudly celebrates the achievements of industry – these are the specially designed commemorative pieces that champion the good fortunes of industrial companies. Not only are these objects aesthetically interesting, they are also important for the information they convey in their physical detail and contextual associations – about mining at Broken Hill, the people and companies involved, colonial exhibitions and commemorative events.

The theme of this 6 minute presentation is still in an early stage of development. It is realised that this topic is a little tangential to the principal conference theme – it is not about managing industrial heritage sites per se, but it is about researching industrial heritage, which, in turn is important to interpreting and managing industrial heritage places.
