Rural Heritage Places in Queensland - Issues effecting their conservation

Andrew LADLAY

The paper will discuss and consider the observations made over the past three years as Rural Heritage Advisor in Queensland, as well as providing some background as to the service's origins.

Issues raised will include:

  • The decline in the viability of rural properties and its effect on their conservation.
  • The lack of desire by the next generation to take over properties which have been in their families for 3-4 generations.
  • The interest in conserving only useful buildings.
  • The lack of suitable tradespeople who can carry out conservation work.
  • The need for advice and funding.
  • The lack of trust of government and government officers and their (perceived) lack of empathy.
  • Ways to help.

Illustrated examples of several of the places to visit, including Elderslie Station, Winton, will be provided.
