Susan Macdonald joined the Getty Conservation Institute in 2008 as Head of Field Projects. Susan has a BSc (Architecture) and a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Sydney, and a Masters in Conservation Studies (University of York/ICCROM). Susan has worked as an architect in private practice in her native Australia and in England, principally on conservation projects. As a senior architectural conservator at English Heritage, Susan was involved in research, technical advice, training and publication relating to building conservation.
Susan moved to the Getty from her position as Director of the NSW Heritage Office in Australia, where she was involved in a wide range of conservation issues from urban planning, development, economics, policy and technical matters and most recently was involved in the successful nomination of the Sydney Opera House to the World Heritage List. She is a certified practicing Planner. Susan has as a particular interest in 20th century heritage conservation and is a member of the DOCOMOMO International Specialist Technical Committee and the ICOMOS 20th Century Committee.
