Social Functions

We know that as well as hearing great speakers and interesting papers, the opportunity to make new friends, renew old friendships and talk with other conference delegates about the conservation of 20th Century heritage is an important reason for you deciding to attend this conference. We have arranged a series of exciting social events during the Conference to give you the opportunity to experience just a few of Sydney’s dynamic sites and venues.

Welcome Function
The Welcome Reception will be held on Tuesday 7th July at The Mint, one of Sydney’s most iconic historic sites. This will be a cocktail function with a brief welcome speech from the Organizing Committee Chair. You’ll be able to network with new contacts or catch up with old friends.

Be(loved) Modern – Evening Lecture at the Sydney Opera House
“Sydney Opera House stands by itself as one of the indisputable masterpieces of human creativity, not only in the 20th century but in the history of humankind.”

How did it come to be inscribed on the world heritage list in 2007? How is it managed as one of the busiest performing arts centre’s in the world, staging up to 2,500 events each year and attracting an estimated 4 million visitors?
A conversation between key players in the nomination process and listing progress with current managers, hosted by Professor Peter Spearritt. Susan Macdonald, Maria Sykes, Louise Cox, Maristella Casciato, Helen Lardner, Sheridan Burke, Gustavo Araoz , Jan Utzon (video link) and Richard Evans.

Conference Dinner
Enjoy a stylish evening at the Conference Dinner held on Thursday 9th July. The Star Room above the IMAX Theatre, venue for the dinner, offers expansive views of the Sydney CBD, and will be an elegant affair giving you (and if you wish, your partner) the chance to enjoy some of Sydney’s best food and wine. Definitely an event not to be missed!

Date & Time: Thursday 9th July 2009, 7.30pm – 11pm
Location: Star Room, IMAX Theatre, Wheat Road, Darling Harbour
Dress: After Five
Tickets: AUD 100 per person to be booked on the registration form; you can book and pay for additional guests during the registration only.

Please note: Tickets need to be purchased by Monday 6th July from the Conference Secrertariat they will not be available for purchase at the Conference.

Surprise Finale
Let the organizing committee for the (Un)Loved Modern Conference thank you for your attendance with a surprise finale event on Friday the 10th July. This will be a fun finish to the conference, a time and a place for you to unwind and have a good time, as well as a last chance to broaden new contacts and spend time with new friends.
