Following Saturday’s field trips, delegates will meet at Southbank for boat trip along the Maribyrnong River and guided tour of Jack’s Powder Magazine, followed by return boat trip. A light dinner and drinks will be provided, with time to explore and view an installation by a local artist.

Hidden away at the base of an escarpment on the Maribyrnong River, the imposing bluestone walls, magazines and earth mounds of Jack’s Magazine have connections to turning points in Victoria’s history – from the gold rush to world wars.

The magazine was originally opened in 1868 to safely store gunpowder for use on the Victorian goldfields. Gunpowder soon became less popular but the site was adapted and expanded to store other dangerous materials – particularly for the ammunition factories close by. It spurred the growth of military industry in the area that became known as the ‘arsenal of Australia’.

Working Heritage was appointed as manager of Jack’s Magazine in June 2015, and as our Silver Partners will host this exclusive event for conference delegates.
