The profile of Melbourne’s Aboriginal cultural heritage is growing and, driven largely by the City of Melbourne’s Reconciliation Action Plan and Aboriginal Heritage Action Plan, the management of Aboriginal cultural heritage is receiving greater attention.
But, given that the assessment of archaeology and broader and less tangible cultural values is occurring on a project by project basis, how can we work towards a more holistic approach to the management of this heritage across the city?
This session will include presentations by the following:
- Shane Charles, Indigenous Team Leader, City of Melbourne – on his experiences and the work of the Council
- Representatives of Melbourne’s Traditional Owner organisations
- Lucy De Kretser, Heritage Registry Information Officer at Aboriginal Victoria – on the new provisions for listing intangible cultural heritage under the 2006 Aboriginal Heritage Act
- Eleanor Burke and Nellie Flagg from the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council and Andrew May from the Heritage Council of Victoria, with Helen Doyle from Context, presenting on the Shared Values project.
- Rueben Berg, Executive Officer at Indigenous Architecture and Design Victoria – on the recognition and incorporation of Aboriginal cultural heritage in new design.
