The gradual departure of heavy industry from Geelong over the last 30 years has left a legacy of defunct spaces – a litany of abandoned warehouses, paper mills, and production plants. This paper explores the rediscovery and reinterpretation of Geelong’s rust-bucket heritage to understand how these spaces are acting as enterprising cultural incubators, and considers the implications of this phenomenon for local connections between people, place and creative practice.
